HERO Dissolution Announcement (commencing June 2024)

It is with a measure of both sadness and joy that Home Educators Resource Organization (HERO) is announcing that the 2023-2024 school year will be the final year of HERO operation.  The HERO Board of Directors is formally announcing the dissolution of the HERO non-profit organization, to be enacted after the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

For the past several years the HERO Board of Directors has actively sought out viable opportunities to continue the HERO ministry following the retirement of the current administrator, Jayne Wahlberg.  After extensive consideration of available alternatives, the board has concluded that dissolving the organization is the best strategy for the furtherance of effective ministry in the local homeschool community.  The board feels that just as HERO was founded through the focus of one committed individual, future effort is best made through a similar pattern.  Any large-scale homeschooling endeavor will require considerable focus, which can only rise through the commitment and experience of a dedicated homeschooling family.  The HERO board is encouraging the formation of other ministries to fill the gap left with the closing of HERO.

As many of you may know, HERO was started in 1996 by Jayne Wahlberg, to offer both her own children and the children of a small homeschool group a diversity of educational opportunities in a Christian environment.  Its’ initial membership consisted of approximately thirty-five families (fifty students), and it rented a humble facility in North St. Paul.  The ministry has expanded through its many years of operation.  The organization, as it exists today, serves hundreds of families and requires extensive management time.

The process of dissolution of the organization will be led by the HERO Board of Directors.  The Board has already engaged the services of a reputable legal firm to guide and oversee the full process, including distribution of all assets owned by HERO.  Pursuant to the state and federal laws that govern HERO as a nonprofit and 501(c)(3) organization, all of the assets of HERO will be either sold at fair market value or distributed to other nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations. There will be no distribution of assets to the private inurement of any HERO member or employee.

We know that this announcement may come as a surprise and/or disappointment to many of our HERO families, but we encourage you to look to the possibilities of new and talented leadership arising from the local homeschooling community.  We are looking forward to seeing what God will do through the committed efforts of caring homeschooling families.
